Get Involved – Be an Activist!
The current state of affairs in our country is impelling more and more people to get involved, to speak up against government actions designed to benefit the powerful. Our country was founded by and for the people, ruled by the Constitution, protected by the Bill of Rights, and inspired by the Declaration of Independence. We want to keep it that way.
If you are considering becoming more active in making your voice - and others - heard, DKA offers a range of opportunities. We understand that people have different skills and comfort levels for taking action, and we stand ready to help you find what works for you.
DKA has always been actively involved in doing the work to elect Democrats to the federal and state legislatures. At our local level, we also help support candidates with similar goals and values who want to run for the RSU 21 School Board or the town Select Boards. If you want to learn more about this work, consider running, or help out during election season, please contact Penny Gruen, DKA president, at pennygk@me.com or 207-229-4771.
The DKA has one of the most active Democratic memberships in the state. New in 2025 is The Democracy Cooperative, on Storer Street in Kennebunk, where local people are gathering to talk about democracy, activism, media, and their own stories and concerns. Everyone is welcome!
Here is a partial list of regular Co-op activities:
Open Office Hours: Wednesday and Friday, noon to 4 pm
“Frontline Friday” drop-ins from noon to 4 pm
Thursday poster making and stand-ups on Route 1, 3-5 pm
Community Conversations…small group discussions with changing topics
York County Democrat meetings
And more…
If you have specific skills you think would be helpful – writing, organizing, helping with events - please let us know via the form below (or call the Co-op at 207-569-0001) and we will get back to you. Or just drop by the Co-op during the hours noted above. Everyone has something to offer and we look forward to meeting you.

RUN FOR OFFICE
Have you considered running for office? Know someone who would be good? There are usually several open seats each election cycle for positions including seats on the Board of Selectmen, School Board of Directors, Light and Power Trustees, Sewer District Trustees, Water District Trustees, and others.
This is the best way to put progressive values to work for our communities. For more information about running for a local office, contact DKA President Penny Gruen at pennygk@me.com or 207-229-4771.
